Yakima River Canyon Marathon & Half Marathon 2023
The 21stt edition of the Yakima River Canyon Marathon and sixth edition of the Half-Marathon are fast approaching on the no-foolin’ date of April 1. If you have signed up, thank you. For those of you still thinking about signing up, the deadline for entry is 11:59 a.m. Wednesday, March 29. After that, registration will be closed.
We are bringing back the Friday night pasta feed and Saturday evening potato feeds/awards ceremony this year. We may purchase tickets for those as you register; if you have signed up for the race, did not initially buy meal tickets but decide you want to dine with us, you may purchase tickets at Friday’s packet pickup, 3-8 p.m. at the Selah Civic Center.
We will enforce cut-off times this year. Those who feel that they cannot complete the race comfortably in seven hours are urged to contact the race director and ask for the early start, which is two hours before the 8 a.m. regular start. We offer the early start for those anticipating that they will be on the course for six-and-a-half hours or more, and the race director must approve your participation in the early start.
Thank you for your understanding.
Registration is now open for the 21th edition of the Yakima River Canyon Marathon and Half-Marathon on the “no-foolin’” date of April 1. Registration will be open until the last week of March.
This year, we intend to bring back the Friday night pasta feed and the Saturday evening potato feed, the latter of which is in conjunction with the awards ceremony. Those who do not attend the ceremony may pick up their awards immediately after the race.

A reminder that after Feb. 28, the entry fee for the marathon and half-marathon will jump from $80 to $95. This is also a reminder that all registration is online only, and there will be no in-person registration on either race day or on the day before. Please note this change from the practice of previous years.
Also, if you decide to defer your entry to next year, the deadline for informing us is Feb. 28.
As in past years, entries will be capped at 200 in the half-marathon due to logistics involving bus transportation. At this point, we have no limit on marathon participants.
The past three years have tested everyone’s patience as we navigated through the pandemic. We appreciate your loyalty and patience as we work our way toward the April 1 race date. We look forward to seeing you then!

ABOUT THE EVENT - A RUNNER TESTIMONIAL
Runner Testimonial…
A marathon that you really should consider for the whole weekend’s experience is the Yakima River Canyon. It simply beats any other marathon experience PERIOD. At the end of the carbo loading dinner the night before, everyone know everyone. Getting on the buses and on the beautiful course the next morning it’s old home week with new friends. At the afternoon baked potato salad bar awards dinner it is simply a hoot. I always stay two nights.
If not ready for a marathon, who cares? There are many, many slow runners and walkers and they are as well embraced, perhaps more so, than the front runners.
You’ll rub elbows with many wide-eyed first timers and many knurly veterans that will astound middle of the packers, back of the packers, all equals at the end of the day.
Well, that’s my take, other locals and those who travel across the country each year and don’t need another WA State feel the same. COOL!
Thanks….Jim Boyd, Aberdeen, WA

MARATHON RACE START
Use Exit 109 from I-90. Go south past the Buzz Inn and Flying J Truck Plaza. Take the first left onto Berry Road…to the race start headquarters at the Days Inn, 901 Berry Road. The starting line is on Canyon Road .2 mile south of the Berry Road intersection. (see map) For safety reasons running in the right lane is recommended, but not mandatory.
MARATHON COURSE DESCRIPTION: This point-to-point Marathon course is exceptionally scenic as it offers spectacular views of the Yakima River Canyon. It starts on Canyon Road .2 mile south of the Berry Road intersection in Ellensburg, Washington. After two loops, it proceeds directly south to the canyon. There are two major hills and many curves as the course follows the Yakima River downstream on the asphalt surfaced highway. The long downhill just before the finish in rural Selah, Washington, near the canyon’s mouth contributes to the net elevation loss of a few hundred feet as it brings the runners to the Yakima Valley orchard and ranch country.
PERSONAL GEAR:
Drop bags to go to the Finish Area may be left at the designated vehicle in front of the Days Inn on race morning before 7:45 a.m. Do not place cash or expensive items in the bags. The bags will be supervised, but we will not be responsible for lost or stolen items.
COURSE SUPPORT:
Aid stations will be located every 2-3 miles to provide water, Powerade, and medical aid of band-aids and petroleum jelly. Medical personnel and restrooms will be available throughout the race.
RACE FINISH:
Use exit 26 from I-82. Take Highway 821 north about 3 miles. (see map)
There will be bus transportation from the finish area to the Selah Civic Center and to the Best Western Ahtanum Inn.
COURSE CLOSURE:
The course will be open for 7 hours. Runners and walkers who have not finished by 3:00 p.m. will be given rides to the finish area. Early starts are allowed only with special permission. Only official and local vehicles are allowed on the race course. Spectators may view the race at the start, finish, and Thrall Road intersection with Canyon Road. There are no accessible intersections in the canyon. No bicycles or baby joggers are allowed on the course.
